"Since 1990, housing productions has consistently failed to keep up with demand, creating a shortfall of nearly 300,000 homes in those counties combined. This shortfall continues in spite of an ever-increasing population."

Everyone frets about traffic in Southern California

The trucks on the freeway, especially the ones carrying containers, the longer and longer rides to work. So here again this is a major challenge for us.

There are things we can do. We can get more trunks on container trains. We can build more railroad track capacity so Metrolink can increase their service. We could improve the overall quality of our commuter service - the metro rail and bus service.  We can build more railroad grade crossings, so we don't get stuck waiting for a mile and a half long freight train. We have to look at this in a more strategic fashion and encourage people to use mass transit. If you go back to the history of Southern California, it all started with rail service. Today, because our dependence on private car has congested our communities, we have to reflect on our past while thinking in new ways.  We have to upgrade the level of service that is offered by mass transit so it is not viewed as a second class option.

  Traffic

Most future freeways expenditures are expected to be consumed by maintenance and marginal improvements such as adding lanes and improving onramps, so traffic will surely slow to a crawl.
