1990, housing productions has consistently failed to keep up with demand,
creating a shortfall of nearly 300,000 homes in those counties combined.
This shortfall continues in spite of an ever-increasing population."

Today railroads are essential to the
movement of goods, both within and to outside our region. |

There's a lot of resistance to railroads.
People who live near rail yards feel that they bear a burden due to
noise, congestion and safety concerns. But because railroads are critical to a
vibrant job market and economy, we have developed ways to mitigate these
sources of discontent. We need to partner with railroads as they
improve the safety and efficiency of goods movements through projects
like the Alameda Corridor, which eliminated crossings which clogged
traffic and added to air pollution.

Here's an
illuminating view of the system that delivers goods to our local stores
and across the nation. The region’s growing population and role as
the nation’s import hub for burgeoning
Pacific Rim
trade is
driving rapid growth of container traffic out of the ports of
Los Angeles
and
Long Beach
and into our communities.
